Trace Adkins brings a little bit of country to Thunder Valley

Special contribution to Placer County Online:

As expected, the cowboy boots and hats were aplenty Friday when Grammy winner and country performer Trace Adkins took the Thunder Valley Outdoor Amphitheater stage.

The showman didn't disappoint, although it took an hour to really get the bluesy show going. Adkins, who makes women swoon with an Elvis-esque tilt of his hips, apologized for that and even thanked the audience for sticking around through the first half of the set as they probably didn't know the songs. But he said he spent a lot of money recording them so someone needed to hear them.

Lake Tahoe boaters reminded to 'clean, drain and dry' after a day on the water

The 4th of July Holiday and fireworks celebrations always bring an influx of boaters to the Lake Tahoe Basin. With sunny skies and warm temperatures predicted for the 4th of July holiday week, boaters are urged to Clean, Drain and Dry their boats before arriving at one of five roadside inspection stations in the Tahoe to avoid delays and decontamination fees.

Boat inspectors are required to inspect every boat for the presence of aquatic invasive species prior to launching the in Lake Tahoe Basin.  Since May, inspectors have intercepted and decontaminated 4 infested boats bound for Lake Tahoe waters.  Three boats contained invasive quagga mussels, with 1 boat potentially carrying New Zealand mudsnails from Oregon.  Without natural predators, these invasive species pose serious threats to the ecology, recreation and local economies of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

CHP reminds drivers to 'Click It'

The CHP reports that last year  34 people were killed in traffic collisions in California during the Independence Day holiday.  This was a significant increase from the 23 people who died in 2010, the last full year for which statistics are available.  Sadly, many of those deaths may have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.

“It is alarming to know that more than 80 percent of the people who were killed in vehicle collisions over the Independence Day holiday last year may have survived had they taken the time to buckle up,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.

Driving under the influence is also a major concern for the CHP.  Last year, over the Independence Day weekend, CHP officers made 1,562 arrests for driving under the influence.

The CHP reminds motorists to designate a non-drinking driver before they celebrate to ensure everyone’s safety while on the road.

Beth Gaines' Cruelty to Animals bill up for Senate vote today

Legislation authored by Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, R-Roseville, was ordered to the Senate consent calendar today, which means it will be one of many bills lumped together for one aggregated vote today.

The bill allows the Department of Justice to perform a federal-level criminal offender record information check on a humane officer applicant, among other provisions.

According to Gaines, in an Assembly analysis of the bill released earlier this year:

"AB 2194 includes the specific and correct language for the FBI and Attorney General's office so that the criminal background information on humane officer applicants can be obtained and the backlog cleared.

"Humane officers play a key role in the health and safety of animals. These well trained individuals have been in limbo due to a technicality leading to backlog."

McClintock says no way to San Francisco's 'subway to nowhere'

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Rocklin, had something to say about the "subway to nowhere," a 1.7 mile train line in San Francisco that is estimated to cost $1.6 billion.

You read that correctly: $1.6 BILLION dollars for less than two miles of rail.

From the floor of the Congressional chambers yesterday, McClintock said:
"It was supposed to link local light rail and bus lines with CalTrain and Bay Area Rapid Transit, but it's so badly designed that it bypasses 25 of the 30 light rail and bus lines that it crosses. To add insult to insanity, it dismantles the seamless light-rail to BART connection currently available to passengers."

McClintock's bid to slash airline subsidies crashes

A House vote on Tuesday killed a bid by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Rocklin, to slash the Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes flights to 120 communities in 35 states in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico and 43 towns in Alaska.

Austerity in action: Lincoln City Council adopts lean budget

The Lincoln City Council passed a lean and mean -- but balanced -- budget for fiscal year 2012-13 on Tuesday night.

In a  memorandum to the council, City Manager Jim Estep wrote:
"The ongoing challenge which we face is to continue to provide a high level of service to Lincoln's citizens within the constraints of reducing funding.
"The General Fund has been cut by 34 % and is ostensibly now functioning with a minimal level of staffing."
The city's budget for the fiscal year is a tad more than $50 million, including more than $11 million from the General Fund, almost $9 million for capital improvements (street, water and drainage improvements) and the remainder coming from special funds (grants and bonds).

Public safety (cops and fire) eats up 74 % of the budgeted General Fund. The budget funds a total of 168 city employees -- 137 full time, and 31 part time staffers.
