FROM THE PLACER COUNTY OFFICE OF ELECTIONS:

Candidate filing for the Presidential General Election to be held November 6, 2012 began on July 16, 2012. Every general election, dozens of people are appointed to local district boards because there are not enough people who file for office. There are still several local offices that will not appear on the November ballot if additional individuals do not file.

You have until August 10, 2012 (or August 15, 2012 if an incumbent does not file) to file for local office and make a difference in your community. If you would like to have a say in what happens to your community, filing for office is the perfect opportunity to do so. Give voters a choice in who will be making the decisions that affect them, instead of the board appointing someone for you.

Department of Pesticide Regulation Announces New Restrictions to Protect Water Quality in Urban Area

Department of Pesticide Regulation Director Brian R. Leahy announced that tomorrow new restrictions will take effect to limit where structural pest control businesses can apply pesticides in an effort to protect water quality in urban areas.

“These are the first regulations of their kind in California to protect water quality from structural pest control applications for ants, spiders and other pests around homes, other buildings and landscaped areas,” Leahy said.

The Counties Exhibit has been a favorite among fair attendees and, according to State Fair officials, draws a large number of visitors.

The exhibit highlights Placer County as a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, wine connoisseurs, epicureans and history buffs. Though Placer County is famous for its rich Gold Rush history, there are many modern day activities that attract thousands each year.

Yellowjacket wasps on the rise, says Placer Mosquito Control

The Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District reports an increase in calls concerning yellowjacket wasps, especially in the western end of Placer County.

Summertime is when yellowjackets are expanding their nests, making them more active and visible.

Yellowjackets are often confused with paper wasps and mud daubers.  These insects may look alike and are all capable of stinging, but the differences in yellowjacket behavior make these wasps much more of a threat to the public.

Abracadabra: Steve Miller Band rocks Thunder Valley

Steve Miller came to Thunder Valley Friday night to party. Not only did he tell the packed outdoor amphitheater that, he made it clear right out of the gate by belting out hit after classic hit.

At the start of the show, fans jumped out of their seats on the relatively cool evening to dance to "Jungle Love." The audience didn't seem fazed that the artist was more than 45 minutes late onto the simple stage.

A few songs into the set after the staple "Take the Money and Run," Miller introduced a guest fiddliest from San Francisco and they jammed "Abracadabra" for a good 15 minutes.

Miller's stop in Lincoln was a break from the big-arena shows he's been playing on the band's 2012 world tour. Tonight he'll be at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View before heading to Wisconsin.

In the meantime, dig this classic EWF hit -- and just try not to dance.

Lincoln is one of the many stops on a several month world tour that includes London, Canada, Germany, Holland and many U.S. cities.

Miller had it going on in the 1970s and early '80s with albums "The Joker," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Book of Dreams," "Circle of Dreams" and "Abracadabra,"  -- each one spawning radio hits.

While Miller slowed down his recording pace some years ago he never quit altogether, releasing a blues CD last year, "Let Your Hair Down," which featured tracks written by legendary blues artists Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and others.

Claim Jumping brothers arrested in Placer County

One man was arrested for claim jumping at a gold mine near Foresthill Saturday night and his brother was later taken into custody on similar charges.

Placer County Sheriff’s detectives took Timothy Figel, 52, of Newcastle, into custody while he was trespassing at the undisclosed mine. The Sheriff’s Office has been called to the mine for theft reports since the late 1990s, where thieves are processing the tailings to extract gold. Property that belongs to the mine’s owner has also been stolen.

After he was arrested Saturday night, Timothy Figel was booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of burglary and theft or attempted theft of gold. Tuesday, Figel’s brother Thomas, 49, of Newcastle, was arrested on charges of theft or attempted theft of gold.

Detectives believe more suspects may be involved in the thefts and are continuing their investigation.

Placer County further tightens belt with 5-year budget plan

The Placer County Board of Supervisors directed staff Tuesday to move forward with implementing a proposed five-year budget strategy that is a centerpiece of the county’s efforts to protect its long-term fiscal health.

The strategy also seeks to ensure the county uses its limited resources to effectively meet public service needs, fulfills board priorities and is positioned to withstand the next economic downturn. Other goals include reducing the use of one-time revenues to fund ongoing operations and bolstering reserve funds now that county revenue is beginning to recover from the recession.

Senator Gaines calls High Speed Rail a 'legendary waste of taxpayers' money'

Senator Ted Gaines, R-Rocklin, criticized the Legislature’s vote to authorize approximately $8 billion for California’s High Speed Rail Project.

“The Democrats just passed another budget that is billions of dollars out of balance and now they are threatening to cut billions more from our schools unless they get a massive tax increase in November,”  Gaines said.

“And they think this is the appropriate time to sink a fortune into a high speed rail project that is doomed to failure?  Those half-empty train cars will be a monument to misplaced priorities and fiscal recklessness.”

Assemblyman Dan Logue urged voters to speak out against the Legislature’s attempt to authorize the start of the High Speed Rail Project. The majority Democrats passed SB 1029 through the Assembly today to authorize the High Speed Rail Authority to begin construction.

“Right after they cut funding to schools and made dangerous changes to the state’s healthcare system by forcing children into the Medi-Cal program, the majority party wants to write a check for $8 billion to build a high speed rail to nowhere,” said Logue. “This will only force more cuts to important programs next year.”
