LaMalfa bill would exempt older cars from CA smog testing

California drivers who own vehicles built between 1976 and 1980 could find relief from smog testing if a bill by Sen. Doug LaMalfa is approved.

Senate Bill 1224 serves two purposes, according to LaMalfa: It would provide relief to lower income drivers who own vehicles from the '76-'80 period, and enable car collectors to enjoy the exemption since their vehicles are rarely brought out on the roads and consequently do not contribute to air pollution. 

California law already exempts vehicles built prior to 1976 from smog inspection.
